About Us

The New Brunswick Business Council is a newly formed group comprised of Presidents and CEO's of some of New Brunswick's leading corporations. We have come together as a non-partisan group of New Brunswickers who have our head offices in New Brunswick and have a deep personal stake in this Province and its future. The Business Council provides an opportunity to share ideas on the steps we have to take if we are to meet the challenges facing New Brunswickers and indeed all Canadians.

New Brunswick and Canada Today


It is a cliché, but undoubtedly true, that the Province is at a turning point. New Brunswick has enjoyed sixty years of growth and prosperity as part of a prosperous and confident post-war Canada. This is a good place to live and to do business. Canada enjoys a high ranking by United Nations indices, and has one of the best economic records among the OECD countries, the most favoured of nations. But we are seeing signs of slippage in our comparative standing. And now one of our signs of strength, the Canadian dollar, is actually exposing a weakness as it flows from a regionally concentrated prosperity and carries with it a threat in the form of lowered competitiveness for our exports and rising interest rates. All of North America faces a growing competitiveness challenge from the most populous and rapidly growing countries.


New Brunswick has ridden the Canadian prosperity wave and indeed has contributed to it. We have seen a considerable closing of the gap between ourselves and the Canadian average in terms of per capita income and other measures.


Promoting Transformational Change


Transformative change needs shared leadership, and effort on part of all sectors and all New Brunswickers. Local communities have their own campaigns and strategies. On the provincial level, the President of UNB launched Next NB two years ago. That effort has spawned two ongoing groups - 21 Leaders, young New Brunswickers committed to building the Province, and The New Brunswick Business Council - CEO's of leading NB-based corporations committed to taking and leading efforts to make a difference

In New Brunswick we realize we have to adjust to new realities and work hard at being more competitive. New Brunswickers would rather be on the plus side of the national equation. The Business Council is working to help move New Brunswick toward that goal. We know by our history that we are capable of transformational change and we are bolstered by the fact that Canadians are committed to fairness and equality of opportunity.

The Council believes it can contribute to understanding and constructive debate both in the Province and nationally, and will be taking its message to a national audience. We want to use our potential as a catalyst to get New Brunswickers thinking and acting to exert a stronger control over their own futures.
